A clinical and statistical study for the syphilis in korean pregnant women

Abstract
|

|
|
1. The estimated prevalence rate of syphilis in pregnant women in severance Hospital was 1.92% of 502 women who seropositive among the 21622 women who delivered during the 13 years and 5 months , rising to 3.3% by 1965 and gradually falling to 2.7% in 1967, but this rate rapidly declined to 1.47 % in 1968 and remained at 1.29% till 1972, therafter resumed a tendency to rise, being 2.14% by 1973. 2. Age distribution of serology positive cases showed a higher incidency of syphilis at before 20 years of age. 3. Parity distribution of serology positive patients showed a high incidence of syphilis in nulliparous women, being 46.0% in VDRL positive cases ; 52.9% in RPCF positive cases in 1962 to May 1975. 4. The classical concept is that infection of the fetus does not result prior to the 16 weeks of gestation but spontaneous early abortion rate from the histories of serology positive cases was approximately 40% and 26.4% in RPCF positive cases. 5. The premature incidence in pregnant syphilis women was acount 33.0%. And according to the gestational weeks 24.4% was before 37 weeks of gestation and their mean body weight was 1788.4 gm., and 75.6% was in over 37 weeks the mean body weight was 2848.6gm. as compare 3242 gm. in normal population in over 37 weeks of gestation 6. The perinatal mortality rate was 248.7 7. Among 65 cases of low-birth weight babies which were 33.0%, 63.1% of whom died, in RPCF positive mother. Full term babies were 67.0% in RPCF positive mothers and 6.1% of them died. 8. Among 26 cases of neonatal deaths. Low-birth-weight cases were 84.6%. 9. Congenital syphilis were 18 cases and 8.1% of incidence. 10. Emphasis is placed upon the necessity of finding and treating all cases of syphilis before or after delivery.
